The “Flaming Skulls” were commissioned by Michael Johnson to go with his 1929 roadster. A beautiful hot rod being built at B & E Custom in Chatsworth CA. The “Shoes on Fire” I did just for fun!

Neon Hamburger etc.

Just shot some photos of recent work at The Americana at Brand.

Amalgamated designed some additional signage for the Jewel City Diner, an old school neon hamburger window sign and a new deco style menu cabinet.

Logo

The Sportsmen’s Lodge has been a San Fernando Valley landmark for decades, and Amalgamated Studios is participating in the update/remodel of the facility. The mid-century cool references are being highlighted on the property, and subsequently in the new identity. The new logo gives us the feeling of when the “valley” was a suburban getaway from the hustle of Los Angeles.

The Jewel City Diner, located at The Americana at Brand, has recently been awarded the 2009 Superior Achievement in Design and Imaging Award in the Fast/Casual Dining category. This honor is bestowed on those who have successfully balanced form and function to create retail environments that fulfill the needs of the consumer while stirring the imagination. The Jewel City Diner will be showcased in the September issue of Retail Traffic.

Amalgamated Studios is proud to have participated in this design with Caruso Affiliated and FER Studios.

Also of note is the fact that the “dessert waitress” logo designed for the Jewel City Diner menus has been selected to be printed in an upcoming book by Logo Lounge, a premier logo design publication and website!

Jazz CD Cover

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Following in the tradition of the great album covers of the 50’s, I illustrated this for the Hamilton High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble. They had the honor of performing at the 52nd Monterey Jazz Festival. The illustration represents the 15 voice choir and the trio.

Retail Signage

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Retail signage varies greatly from store to store, depending on the target audience. Attached are three retail locations with different needs, thus requiring different signage solutions.

Michael Sharpe Rare and Antiquarian Books targets high end sophisticated buyers. Also they are located in a historic Pasadena Craftsman building, contributing to the overall feeling. The design solution is an Arts and Crafts font treatment, flat cut and mounted on a smooth limestone slab. The grain in the limestone (hand picked at the stone yard) contrasts beautifully with the forest green and copper of the letters and frame.

Wasteland and Diavolina sell clothing, shoes and accessories in a more typical store front retail environment. Wasteland is targeting the hip used clothing market, and Diavolina is more high end fashion. These two identities were provided to Amalgamated and we just helped with the colors and materials.
